Dowagiac baseball splits with South Haven

DOWAGIAC — The Dowagiac baseball team split with host South Haven in a non-divisional Wolverine Conference doubleheader Friday.

The Chieftains won the opening game 16-9, but dropped the nightcap 6-4.

A.J. Kidd was the winning pitcher in the first game with relief help from Duan Simpson and Hunter Williamson.

Dowagiac scored its 16 runs on 11 hits, including a 4-for-5 performance from Simpson, who drove in six runs.

Hunter Brackensick was 2-for-3 with a double. Williamson and Andrew McIntosh also doubled for the Chieftains.

In the nightcap, Dowagiac finished with seven hits.

Simpwon was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and an RBI.

Deshawn Brooks took the loss as he allowed two earned runs on four hits with four strikeouts.

The Chieftains return to the diamond Friday when they host Otsego.

The Chieftains went 1-2 at its own invitational on Saturday.

Dowagiac defeated Cassopolis 2-1 before falling to Coloma in the championship match 1-0.

The Comets defeated the Rangers 8-0 in the second round of the round robin.
