Berrien, Cass County Cub Scouts to race at district pinewood derby

SOUTH BEND — The Boy Scouts of America, Cub Scouts of LaSalle Council will race at the Algonquian District Pinewood Derby Finals.

The race will take place at 6 p.m. April 13 at the Studebaker National Museum, 201 Chapin St., South Bend.

Competitors from Berrien and Cass counties; St. Joseph County; Marshall County will take part in the event. More than 100 Cub Scout racers will pit their gravity-propelled cars against the others in a downhill race.

The adult volunteers of Pack 444 said they organize the District Pinewood Derby every year to enable the youth to learn elementary sciences, such as gravity, aerodynamics and friction, in a friendly yet competitive atmosphere.

The 12-foot-long race track will be set up inside the museum alongside a computerized scoreboard for keeping track of the race times. Winners of the race will be awarded trophies.

The Studebaker National Museum is partnering with the BSA to help youth gain life skills that will produce the leaders of tomorrow.

The Cub Scouts is the preliminary program to the Boy Scouts of America for those youth (boys and girls) whose ages range from 5-11. Youth in the Cub Scouts participate in activities that seek to help them in their education, to develop positive characteristics such as cheerfulness, kindness, servant leadership, community involvement and helpfulness to others and self.

The LaSalle Council provides the programs for character development and values-based leadership training to more than 5,500 youth from kindergarten through high school in eight counties across northern Indiana and southwest lower Michigan, said officials. More than 2,000 adult volunteers deliver and support scout’s impactful programs to both boys and girls.
