Shelby Whitaker is a junior on the Dowagiac softball team.
What has been one of your greatest accomplishments as an athlete?
SW: My first year of ICU travel softball my team, and I qualified for nationals in California.
What has been one of your biggest disappointments as an athlete?
SW: Tearing my labrum then dislocating my pinky.
Who is a “hero” in your life and why?
SW: My mom, because she takes care of my autistic brother and I.
When are you the most nervous while you are competing?
SW: In softball, probably when I go up to bat.
Describe an embarrassing athletic moment.
SW: I was playing in a tournament and I tripped over my shoe lace trying to cover a base.
How do you tend to workout/train when by yourself?
SW: I tend to play loud music and spend like two hours working out/training.
What other sport would you like to compete in if you were not playing yours?
SW: Swimming.
Why are sports an important part of a high school experience?
SW: I think it brings closeness and family. I feel it is important with the stress of high school.
How would you give away $50,000?
SW: I would donate it to autism awareness.
If you could be the head coach of a team for a year, what team would you choose?
SW: The Chicago Bandits.
If I did not play sports, I would…?
SW: Probably join some sort of club.
What is the most challenging thing for you to do in your sport?
SW: Making quick adjustments or learning on the go.
If you could change one rule about your sport, what would it be?
SW: The fielder being in the way of the runner without possession of the ball.
What is the best compliment you have ever received?
SW: Honestly, my hustle. “I love how you hustle. It makes you very important.”
What was the scariest thing you have had to do? Are you glad you did it?
SW: Moving schools this past year. Yes, I feel at home in Dowagiac.
What was the last thing you saw someone do that really impressed you?
SW: My coaches staying calm when they are really angry.
What is your favorite hobby? Why?
SW: Hanging out with my niece and nephew. They are important to me. I love them very much.
