Brandywine Athletic Hall of Fame seeking nominations

NILES — In the history of Brandywine High School, many great athletes, coaches and teams achieved impressive feats on the playing fields and courts. To recognize their accomplishments, the Brandywine Community Schools Development Board is asking the community to cast their nominations for the Brandywine Athletics Hall of Fame.
Rod Runyan, the development board president, said the board wanted to involve the community in the second induction process.
“What we are trying to do is get the word out,” Runyan said. “I think it’s important because different people in the community have diverse memories of athletes from when they were in school. They may have a closer connection to someone that current administration doesn’t have that memory of.”
Those nominated should have graduated from Brandywine at least 10 years ago. Nominations can be for male and female athletes, coaches and teams. Submissions are welcomed by anyone in the community, including those who did not graduate from Brandywine High School.
Nomination forms can be found by visiting the Brandywine Community Schools website, then clicking on the athletics page and the Hall of Fame nomination. Those who recommend a candidate should be prepared to answer why they think that person deserves the honor. The deadline for submissions is April 30.
After all the submissions have been collected, the current members of the hall of fame and the Hall of Fame Committee will cast their votes for a pool of new inductees. They will select a variety of men, women, coaches and teams to be named in the Brandywine Athletics Hall of Fame. Those chosen will be inducted during homecoming weekend in the fall.
On Oct. 5, 2018, the inaugural class of 18 athletes was inducted into the hall of fame during the high school’s homecoming football game. Those honored included athletes who played for the school in the 1960s and 1980s.
The board initiated the hall of fame with the hopes of keeping more alumni in touch with the Brandywine school district. Runyan said the board also wanted to shed light on the accomplishments of those who created a sports legacy at Brandywine. He described how the athletes chosen for the inaugural induction were honored to be part of the hall of fame.
Runyan said he hopes that involving the community will help to bring more Brandywine athletes, teams and coaches into the spotlight.
“We are looking to access this collective community memory,” Runyan said. “The more [nominees] we have to choose from, the better.”
