Niles’ Zimmerman to wrestle for state championship

DETROIT — Niles’ Jamison Zimmerman will wrestle for a state championship today at Ford Field in Detroit.
Zimmerman reached the 103-pound Division 2 title match by beating Kyle Ferrier of Marysville 7-3 in the semifinals.
Zimmerman (39-6) defeated Melvindale’s Musa Yahia 12-11 in the opening round before defeating Jack Parker of Spring Lake 8-6 in the quarterfinals.
Brandywine’s Hunter Heath and Dowagiac’s Dylan Elmore both reached the state semifinals in Division 4 and Division 3 respectively before suffering their first loss.
Both were in competition Saturday morning.
Heath (50-2) pinned Chase Hartz of Sandusky in the opening round before defeating Evan Jones of Kent City 4-2 in overtime.
Elmore (50-5) defeated Gavin Miller of Remus Chippewa Hills 9-3 in the first round before upsetting defending state champion Dametruis Castillo of Alma 3-1 in the quarterfinals.
Cassopolis’ Dylan Green advanced to Saturday after losing his first match before winning three consecutive consolation matches.
All other area wrestlers were eliminated on Friday.
The consolation rounds go under way at 9 a.m. Saturday with the final slated to begin at 3 p.m.
