DOWAGIAC — Following a chase involving two separate individuals, Dowagiac Police have arrested a man on drug and weapons charges.
According to Dowagiac Public Safety Director Steven Grinnewald, at approximately 2:40 p.m. Thursday, Dowagiac police officers had been called to a residence in the 200 block of Beckwith Street in the city regarding a verbal dispute. When police arrived in the area, a suspect from the disturbance fled on foot. Officers pursued the subject through several blocks of the southeast area neighborhood. The subject eventually fled into a field that borders the city limits before running back into the city. He was apprehended in the 200 block of Third Avenue.
Once the subject was apprehended, police determined that the subject was not the original subject officers were pursuing. The apprehended subject had run from police because he was aware that there were warrants for his arrest. Officers found that the apprehended suspect had valid warrants out for his arrest. At the time of his arrest, the subject was also in possession of methamphetamine as well as a handgun.
The 28-year-old suspect was arrested for outstanding warrants, possession of methamphetamine, carrying a concealed weapon, resisting law enforcement, felon in possession of a firearm and felony firearms violations. The suspect was lodged at the Cass County Jail.
The original suspect was not located.
Dowagiac police were assisted at the scene by Pokagon Band Tribal Police, Michigan State Police and the Cass County Drug Enforcement Team.
