Cynthia Young, of Buchanan, is a volunteer for Redbud Area Ministries. The charity organization distributes food, clothing and household supplies to those in need. Young has been a volunteer for about 10 years.

Can you describe your duties as a volunteer at RAM?

I work mostly with helping people get food and helping to do the laundry and whatever else needs to be done. We do food, clothes and household items and we just kind of fall into roles. I mostly work with the food part of it. It’s putting food on the shelves, but mostly helping people get food, weighing it out and helping them get on their way.

How did you first get involved working as a volunteer at RAM?

You know I just wandered down one day. The kids were pretty much up and grown and I had some time on my hands and of course was familiar with RAM. So, I just came down and volunteered my time and I have been here ever since.

What do you enjoy about being a volunteer?

I love everybody who comes in and that is the people we work with as well as our clients. It has just been very pleasurable. We just have a good time. It’s nice to be able to give back to the community. We have always loved Buchanan.

How do you think RAM helps the Buchanan community?

In many ways. Some people just come in once, if they are in a tough time and others come in pretty regularly. We all need a handout or a hand up, I should say, now and then.

Why would you encourage other people to get involved as a volunteer?

If people have the time and inclination it’s just an easy thing to do. It’s right here in town. We [volunteers] cover for each other if need be. It’s just an easy thing to do.
