Chieftains come up short against Plainwell

DOWAGIAC — The final statistics show that Dowagiac was outgained by a single yard by visiting Plainwell at Chris Taylor-Alumni Field Friday night.

The 44-36 final score tells a different story.

Dowagiac trailed by as much as 30-7 in the third quarter in its 44-36 loss to the Trojans in Wolverine Conference play.

Plainwell led 30-15 when the game was stopped for quite a while as a Trojan player suffered an injury and was taken to the hospital in an ambulance.

Dowagiac outscored Plainwell 21-14 from that point on, but could never dig itself out of the early hole it dug.

The Chieftains used a balance attack on offense to score its 36 points.

Dowagiac (2-3) rushed for 149 yards and threw for 151 yards.

Cailyn Murphy was 14-of-28 for 151 yards with touchdown passes of 12 and nine yards to D.J. Lanier, who finished with four catches for 38 yards.

Kade Schreiber ran for 88 yards on six carries and caught three passes for an additional 58 yards. Schreiber scored on a 45-yard run.

The other Dowagiac touchdowns came on a one-yard run by Nico Linares and a three-yard run by Dashawn Brooks.

Lamberto Paredes led the Chieftains’ defense with even tackles, while Linares, Alex McIntosh and Andrew McIntosh all had six stops.

Dylan Hill recovered a pair of fumbles, while Alex McIntosh also picked up a fumble.

Dowagiac hits the road Friday night as it travels to Sturgis (1-4) for another Wolverine Conference contest. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

The Chieftains will play back-to-back home games Oct. 5 and Oct. 12 against Otsego and South Haven respectively. The Otsego game is homecoming night.
