EAU CLAIRE — Host Dowagiac struggled out of the gate at the Wolverine Conference Jamboree at Indian Lake Hills Golf Course, but managed to put it together down the stretch to finish second to league-leading Sturgis Wednesday afternoon.

“I thought we got off to a rough start, but the girls hung tough and did a terrific job of not giving up,” said Dowagiac coach Bob Turner. “The girls remembered not shooting well at our home course last year, and I think they were determined to correct that tonight, and I think they did a pretty good job of it.”

The Trojans, after losing their first jamboree of the season on Monday, rebounded to shoot 195 and take home the team title.

Dowagiac was second with a season-best round total of 205, while South Haven was third with a 212 and Otsego fourth with a 214.

Plainwell, which is second in the current league standings, finished a distant sixth with a score of 222.

Heidi Hines of Three Rivers earned medalist honors with a round of 41.

The Chieftains’ Rebecca Franklin and Greta Whitaker both cracked the top 10 with scores of 46 and 51 respectively. Franklin was third and Whitaker tied for seventh.

“Greta Whitaker and Rebecca Franklin were not at their best,” said Turner. “I can’t wait until they both shoot their best on the same round. But both finished in the top 10.”

Lynsie Stolpe was a perfect example of Dowagiac getting off to a slow start, but finishing strong.

“Stolpe hit three balls out of bounds in her first two holes and held it together and still came in at 56,” Turner said. “I was very proud of her finish.”

Freshman Calley Ruff had her best round of the year with a 52 and senior Peytin Lee played her last home jamboree.

Ruff finished with a 52 and Lee shot 63.
