NILES — The Southwest Michigan Families Against Narcotics chapter and the Voice Change Hope Alliance is sponsoring a free prescription opioid and heroin overdose prevention education event from 6 to 8 p.m. today, at the Niles District Library, 620 E. Main St.

Those who complete the training will receive a free naloxone kit. Naloxone is the antidote for an opiate overdose that can help reverse the effects of an overdose that can result in death.

Who can give naloxone to someone who has overdosed?

Overdose prevention and detection training is provided to any teenager or adult.  Naloxone will only be distributed to a person 18 years and older who completes the 90-minute training.  Teenagers 14 years and older are encouraged to attend the training to help identify the signs of overdose in order to call for help.
