DOWAGIAC — For the first time this season, the Sturgis girls golf team did not win a Wolverine Conference jamboree.

Plainwell unseated the league-leading Trojans, who won the first six jamborees.

The Trojans shot 191 at Cheshire Hills in Allegan to captured first-place.

Sturgis was the runner-up after shooting 196, while Dowagiac finished third with a 216.

Plainwell’s Claire Awe led the charge as she grabbed medalist honors with a round of 41.

Dowagiac was led by Greta Whitaker’s 47.

Last Thursday the Chieftains finished in the runner-up position to Sturgis at Sauganash Golf Club in Three Rivers.

The Trojans shot 195, while Dowagiac finished with a 212, led by Rebecca Franklin’s 43.

“It was a team effort,” said Dowagiac coach Bob Turner. “Rebecca led us as always, and while we had one player struggle, the others picked up the slack and we were able to place well. Hopefully it is a confidence builder for us and we can put together a round where everyone shoots well and we can take a run at Sturgis.”

The Chieftains host the Wolverine Conference for a jamboree at Indian Lake Hills at 4 p.m. today.
