NILES — St. Mary’s Boy Scouts of America Troop 579 plans to unveil a plaque to honor all Troop 579 Scouts who have attained the rank of Eagle since the troop’s inception in 1935.

All Troop 579 Eagle Scouts as well as community supporters are invited to attend this special celebration. The ceremony will take place during the next Court of Honor at 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 9, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church Gymnasium, 219 S. State St. in Niles. After the Court of Honor, guests are invited to stay and enjoy a dinner provided by the troop.

The name of each Eagle Scout will be engraved on its own brass plate, and all the names will be displayed together on one large custom-made wooden plaque. Council records have been consulted, and current estimates show the total number of Troop 579 Eagle Scouts at well over 100. The plaque will be displayed in a prominent location in the St. Mary’s Gymnasium, where the troop meets each week.

The community is encouraged to contact the troop with any names of Troop 579 Eagle Scouts to help ensure that the plaque is complete. Names can be added and rearranged after the ceremony as new information becomes available.

Troop 579 scouts said they would like to thank St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the surrounding community for its support of Scouting, both past and present. So far in 2018, four Troop 579 Scouts have attained the rank of Eagle. The troop currently has seven Life Rank Scouts “in the nest,” working on their Eagle requirements in the hopes of having their names added to the plaque.
