Big second quarter lifts Three Rivers over Dowagiac

THREE RIVERS — Visiting Dowagiac gave up 22 points in the second quarter and was never able to recover in a 29-15 Wolverine Conference loss at the hands of Three Rivers Thursday night.

The Wildcats (2-0) got touchdowns from Parker Ellifritz, Garrett McDonald and Bryce Morlan, along with a safety after both teams went scoreless in the opening 12 minutes of the contest.

Ellifritz scored on an eight-yard run while McDonald scored from nine yards out.

Following the safety, Morlan hauled in a five-yard touchdown pass from Jalen Heivilin.

Dowagiac scored the only touchdown of the third quarter on a 19-yard touchdown pass from Cailyn Murphy to Alex McIntosh.

Three Rivers sealed the victory in the fourth quarter with a four-yard run by Devon Gidley.

Dowagiac attempted to make a comeback after Nico Linares scored on a two-yard run, the the early deficit was too much for the Chieftains to overcome.

Dowagiac was outgained by Three Rivers 319-126, including 110-2 on the ground.

Duan Simpson had 13 yards on seven carries for the Chieftains.

Murphy finished the night 11-of-23 for 125 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

T.J. Reed led Dowagiac in receptions with two for 49 yards.

Alex McIntosh topped the defensive charts with eight tackles. Andrew McIntosh finished with five.

The Chieftains (1-1) return to action against host Allegan at 7 p.m. Friday night.
