Chieftains to play in the Bobcats’ quad tournament scheduled for Oct. 16

LAWRENCE — The Brandywine volleyball team improved to 5-1 with a sweep of host Lawrence last Thursday.

The Bobcats defeated the Tigers 25-9, 25-9 and 25-8.

Bethany Duval had 11 kills, five aces, three blocks and two digs to lead Brandywine.

Nicole Sachman had six kills, four aces and 15 digs, while Olivia Thomas had five kills and two aces.

Kylie Myers finished with four kills and five blocks.

Audrey Longley had 27 assists, six digs, two kills and an ace.

Brandywine opens the home portion of its schedule Wednesday when it hosts Parchment in a BCS Athletic Conference match. The varsity match is scheduled to begin at 6:15 p.m.

Niles cross country

BATTLE CREEK — The Niles girls cross country team finished fourth at the Harper Creek Optimist Club Invitational on Saturday.

Gull Lake won the girls championship with a score of 26.

Battle Creek Harper Creek was second with 42 points, while Hanover-Horton was third with 48 points.

Niles finished with 49 points.

Kaylee Thompson was the runner-up with a time of 20:47 for Niles, while also had Kayla Trueblood finish 12th (23:15) and Erin Thomas finish 15th (23:56).

The Vikings finished eighth in the boys portion of the meet with 187 points.

Hanover-Horton took first with 15 points and Gull Lake second with 33.

Weston Eager was the top boys finisher for Niles as he placed 17th with a time of 19:59.
