Just Pie comes to town

EDWARDSBURG — M-62 in Edwardsburg just got a little bit more active now that Just Pie moved from the outskirts of town to the center of the village.
The mom-and-pop-style restaurant officially opened at its new location at 69222 Davis St. in Edwardsburg, near the Dollar General. Until recently, it was located on US-12 in Adamsville, about five miles west of its current location.
“Think about where we were located, and little traffic it had and people were coming all the way out there,” said Cathleen Locey, the owner of Just Pie. “This new location is perfect.”
The previous location was also difficult to see as it was situated far from the road on a residential property, with several trees obstructing the view.
The new space is also much larger than the old one. Locey said she needed more room to keep up with the demand of her pies — a demand she expects will only increase now that Just Pie is in a higher-trafficked area.
The larger location includes significantly more dining space, which is also where a self-serving coffee and water stand is.
“We needed a much larger building,” Locey said. “It was such as success when we opened it. Evidently, there aren’t really any pie shops in the area.”
In order to create the space, Just Pie transformed an old pole barn. Locey’s brother, who works in construction, did most of the renovations, which she said took longer than she expected due to all the red tape.
“When you’re doing something like that you have to go to the building zoning person, then you have to go to building permit person, your electrical permit, your plumbing permit,” she said.
One thing that has not changed about Just Pie is its menu. The restaurant still offers one savory pie per day, which usually contains meat, and about three sweet pies per day, which usually contain some type of fruit. Locey came up with the recipes herself.
Her pies are served in 3-, 5- and 9-inch pie tins. three-inch pies cost $3, 5-inch pies cost $5 and 9-inch pies cost $12. She said that a 5-inch pie is her most popular, and 9-inch pies must be ordered at least a day in advance. Just pie is open Wednesday through Saturday.
“I think it’s just good for the area,” she said. “We’ve lived here our whole lives and we’re serving the people we grew up with. … We have a rapport with the community and the teachers. The banks are now ordering pies on their lunches. It’s just really nice.”
She hopes that the new location and larger serving space will allow her business to grow, while still providing for the customers that supported her from day one — even with her business was located 5 miles outside of town.
“The support of the community has been fabulous,” she said. “We have the same people who were coming when it was farther away, plus now they’ve told friends. A lot of people are noticing it because of the location across from the new Dollar General, which is very busy.”
