BUCHANAN — Buchanan Mayor Brenda Hess announced Wednesday that she was stepping down as mayor.

Hess posted the decision via social media. She said the decision was a tough one to make and that she has been passionate about representing her community since she was appointed mayor in 2016. She said the only factor in her decision was finding an ideal home on the St. Joseph River for her and her husband, Chip. Because the home is outside of the city limits, Hess is not permitted to serve as mayor, according to Buchanan’s charter.

“When your dream house comes along, you can’t give it up,” Hess said. “We have been looking and have always wanted to live on the water. We would be foolish not to take this opportunity.”

Their offer on the home was accepted and Hess said they put their house on the market Wednesday.

At this time, Hess said she does not know when her official last day will be. She said she intends to serve as mayor up until the day that her Buchanan home in Ottawa Court sells.

The new mayor will be decided following the November election, after commissioners are selected to lead the city. Buchanan commissioners will then appoint a mayor of their choosing.

Hess’ name will still be on the November ballot, but only because she missed the time frame to withdraw it.

Hess emphasized that she still intends to be active in her community and will continue to help the Little Bucks Bookmobile distribute free literature to children. Outside of her role as mayor, Hess also works at Moccasin Elementary School as a literary coach.

In Friday’s paper, the Niles Daily Star will write a full story reflecting on Hess’ accomplishments as mayor and her hopes for the city of Buchanan under new leadership.
