NILES — The Niles soccer team captured its ninth consecutive VanDenBerg Invitational championship in dominating fashion.
The Vikings routed Cassopolis 6-1 in the semifinals and then made the short trip across town to blank rival Brandywine 8-0 in the championship match.
Buchanan, which lost to the Bobcats 9-1 in the other semifinal, was blanked by the Rangers 8-0 in the consolation contest.
“Great start to our season,” said Niles coach Ryan Haines. “Even though we had some varsity players out for the weekend, our subs and JV players stepped up to the challenge of winning the VanDenBerg for the ninth year in a row.”
In the opener, Bryant Echeverria had a goal and two assists against the Rangers.
Also scoring were Jesus Magno-Garcia, Jackson Shields (2) and Cameron Clanton.
Drew Gourlay had a pair of saves.
In the title game, Echeverria had six goals and an assist.
Also scoring were Shields and Adam Shephard.
Gourlay had one save and also assisted on the fourth Echeverria goal.
“Bryant Echeverria had a outstanding day, knotting eight goals and three assists in both games,” Haines said. “We look to see more of the same productivity and effort in the games ahead.”
Niles travels to Edwardsburg Wednesday for its first regular season match of the year.
