BENTON TOWNSHIP — Lake Michigan College is offering a new Campaigns and Elections course this fall for students who want to get involved in the political process.

The Political Science 205 Special Topics course will take place every other fall on election years. Students will gain hands on experience staffing voter registration tables, giving presentations, organizing chat forums and keeping students informed about candidates. They will also hear guest speakers, practice analyzing voter data using Statistical Analysis Software and learn about fiscal budgeting.

“This is not a typical lecture course. Students will actively lead and participate at their own levels. What students get out of this class is entirely up to them and it will look great on any resume or scholarship application,” said political science professor Dr. Tiffany Bohm.

LMC is part of the national Voter Friendly Campus program. If this inaugural class is successful with its voter registration activities and get out the vote drive on election day, LMC would become the only Michigan community college to hold a “Voter Friendly Campus” title.

“Students in any major will benefit from this class through the activities, collaboration opportunities and community service experience. Marketing majors can write our press releases, business majors can craft proposals to network for the election night party,” said Bohm.

The Campaigns and Elections course will take place 12:55 to 2:25 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays on the Benton Harbor campus in the Todd Building, Room 1304. The Course Registration Number is 13649. Classes begin Sept. 4. Visit lakemichigancollege.edu to apply.
