Fernwood Garden events

NILES — Fernwood Botanical Garden and Nature Preserve is a place where nature blends with gardens and art. Fernwood is comprised of 105 acres on the St. Joseph River and is located at 13988 Range Line Road. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday. Café hours are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and noon to 3 p.m. Sunday.

Here is a look at upcoming events taking place at Fernwood.

Wednesday, Aug. 15

• 10 a.m. to noon — Pond Study for Kids

Children ages 6 to 10 visit Fernwood’s ponds to catch crayfish, tadpoles, dragonfly nymphs, giant water bugs and more. Those participating are advised to dress in old clothes and shoes, and bring a change of fresh clothes. $10 (Members $8)

• 12:15 to 1:30 p.m. and 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. — Summer Yoga

People are invited to bring their yoga practice into the outdoors. All levels are welcome in this class that will incorporate both yang (energetic movement) and yin (restorative) poses to restore the vital self. $12 (Members $10)

Saturday, Aug. 18

• 10:30 a.m. to noon Fernwood Book Group  The Nature Fix: Why Nature Makes Us Happier, Healthier and More Creative by Florence Williams

• 2 to 4 p.m. Nature Stations: Butterflies

People can drop by and explore something from nature. This event is free with paid Fernwood admission.

Sunday, Aug. 19

• 2 to 4 p.m. Garden Stations: Lawn Seeding

People can drop by for a hands-on learning experience straight from the gardens. This event is free with paid Fernwood admission.

Wednesday, Aug. 22

• 12:15 to 1:30 p.m. and 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. Summer Yoga

People can bring their yoga practice into the outdoors. All levels are welcome in this class that will incorporate both yang (energetic movement) and yin (restorative) poses to restore the vital self. $12 (Members $10)

• 7 to 9 p.m. Five Seasons with Piet Oudolf

An Environmental Film Festival presented by Chikaming Open Lands and Fernwood at the Vickers Theatre, Three Oaks. It is documentary that reveals how the revolutionary landscape designer, Piet Oudolf, upends conventional notions of nature, public space and, ultimately, beauty itself. $10 (Fernwood and COL Members $8)

Saturday, Aug. 25

• 2 to 4 p.m. Curious Coyotes: Endangered Species

Children ages 6 to 10 can learn about the threatened and endangered species that live in the area. Those interested are advised to dress for walking the trails. $12 (members $10)

Sunday, Aug. 26

• 2 to 4 p.m. Art Stations: Fibonacci Patterns

People are invited to try their hand at a free art project. This event is free with paid Fernwood admission.

Wednesday, Aug. 29

• 12:15 to 1:30 p.m. and 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. — Summer Yoga

People are invited to bring their yoga practice into the outdoors. All levels welcome in this rejuvenating class that will incorporate both yang (energetic movement) and yin (restorative) poses to restore the vital self! $12 (Members $10)
