Nita Rossow is a volunteer in the main office of the Cass County Fair. Though she grew up in Niles, she is currently a teacher in Massachusetts. Each summer, she takes a vacation to visit family and volunteer at the fair.

How did you get started volunteering at the fair?

I’ve been volunteering here for at least 25 years. I was hired to work here for the summer when I was a freshman or sophomore in college, and I really enjoyed myself. I was hired to work in the office to answer the phones and things like that in the weeks leading up to the fair. I had never been to the Cass County Fair before, I didn’t know anything about 4-H, so I learned on the job and it was wonderful.

I have been volunteering for the fair ever since. Since I am a teacher and have the summers off, I will come to the [Cass County] area, so I am often able to volunteer during fair week. It’s wonderful for me. I really enjoy it. It’s the people here that keep me coming back.

What do you do as a volunteer?

I work in the main office, so it’s basically anyone that has a question or concern or problem or needs tickets, we handle those issues. We spread cheer and do whatever we can do.

What do you like about volunteering at the fair?

Part of it is the people. It really is a great bunch of people, so I really enjoy that.

Also, for me, it is the ability to do something different. I didn’t grow up on a farm or anything like that. I was a city girl — I still am in Massachusetts. I get to do something different, and it’s fascinating. I love county fairs anyways, so it’s cool to have kind of a behind-the-scenes look at a county fair. Working in the main office, you get a different perspective than just walking around at the fair.

Why do you think volunteering is important to a community?

For me, it allows me to do something that I don’t normally get to do. It exposes me to new things. I think it is good to be out there doing something and giving your time and energy for something that is worthwhile.

How would you encourage others to volunteer?

Figure out what you are good at or what you are interested in. Start there. Find out what you are going to enjoy doing. From there, be asking questions and following up with people and putting yourself in touch with people that can help with that.
