SOUTH BEND — The Potawatomi Zoo announced some new additions to its animal collection. “Drake” and “Jackson,” the capybaras, join “Xing-Xing,” the red panda, and “Humvee,” the baby American porcupine, as the zoo’s newest residents.
The capybara, a species of South American rodent, is the largest living rodent in the world. Drake and Jackson share a home with the zoo’s giant anteaters in the South America area and can be seen swimming in their pool or lounging under the brush in the Giant Anteater Exhibit.
Xing-Xing, the zoo’s new red panda, was introduced to the Red Panda Exhibit in June. Xing-Xing is less than a year old and is full of energy. Visitors can often find him hanging out in his favorite tree or climbing around the Red Panda Exhibit. A new mate will join him on exhibit later this year. The zoo hopes for panda cubs in the future as this addition is part of a breeding recommendation of the Red Panda Species Survival Program through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
Humvee, the zoo’s baby American porcupine, can be seen in his exhibit in the Zoo Farm area. He joined the zoo in July and is the newest addition to the zoo’s Animal Ambassadors program. As an animal ambassador, “Humvee” will visit schools in the area, be a part of the educational programming at the zoo, and help bring people closer to nature.
