NILES — Fernwood Botanical Garden and Nature Preserve is a place where nature blends with gardens and art. Fernwood is comprised of 105 acres on the St. Joseph River at 13988 Range Line Road, Niles. There’s always lots going on at the local garden from arts and crafts to exercise opportunities. Listed below are upcoming events for July 25 to Aug. 2.

Wednesday, July 25

• 12:15 to 1:30 p.m. and 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. Summer Yoga

The community is invited to bring their yoga practice into the outdoors. All levels are welcome in this class that will incorporate both yang (energetic movement) and yin (restorative) poses to restore participant’s vital self. $12 (Members $10)

• 7 to 9 p.m. Environmental Film Festival

This Environmental Film Festival is presented by Chikaming Open Lands and Fernwood at the Vickers Theatre, Three Oaks. This documentary seeks to reveal how the revolutionary landscape designer, Piet Oudolf, upends people’s conventional notions of nature, public space and, ultimately, beauty itself. $10 (Fernwood and COL Members $8)

Thursday, July 26

• 2 to 4 p.m. Volunteer Educators Training Session: Tallgrass Prairie

Volunteer educators are essential to the success of Fernwood youth programs, as they help lead nature walks on the trails, assist with public programming, and so much more. Those interested in joining volunteer efforts should dress for walking the trails. All volunteers are welcome to attend any session of interest.

Friday, July 27

• 6:30 to 9 p.m. Chris Green Quartet

The CGQ, led by saxophonist Chris Greene, has been a highly visible part of Chicago’s jazz scene since 2005, recently winning the 2018 Best Jazz Entertainer at the Chicago Music Awards. Described by “AllAboutJazz” as “a post-bop maverick intent on shaking things up for the mainstream,” the saxophonist has been committed from the get-go to creating signature music. Food will be prepared by Chef Tim Carrigan, beer and wine will be available for purchase. Tickets in advance $12 (Purchase between July 24–27 $15)

Sunday, July 29

• 2 to 4 p.m. Nature Stations: Pond Study

The community is invited to drop by and explore nature.

Wednesday, Aug. 1

• 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Niles Handweavers Guild

This class will teach dying techniques. Please contact Elizabeth Pilley at (269) 697-4003 for more details.

Jon Meyer Nature Day Camps

Fernwood’s forests, pond, river, and prairie serve as the classrooms for these popular day camps.

Roy and Ethelbel Knauer Art Camps

Fernwood’s Roy and Ethelbel Knauer Art Camps combine the arts with natural sciences and are designed to stimulate curiosity, appreciation, and knowledge of the natural world.
