MDOT to host informational open house about potential removal of US-12 bridges

NILES — The Michigan Department of Transportation has scheduled an open house to discuss the 2023 reconstruction of the US-12/M-51 interchange in Niles Township.

The open house will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 18, at Southwestern Michigan College’s Niles Campus in Community Room 134, 33890 US-12, Niles.

There will be short presentations on study progress, which are planned at 4:15 p.m. and 5:15 p.m. Study information is posted to the MDOT study website at michigan.gov/mdot/0,4616,7-151-9621_11058-470518–,00.html.

MDOT is planning to remove two US-12 bridges over M-51 in 2023 and currently is looking at several alternatives for replacing the current interchange. The study will also identify future M-51 pavement improvement projects from the Michigan/Indiana state line to M-60 Business Route. The study contains traffic operations, pavement treatment, storm sewer inspection, environmental resource, and public engagement components.
