CASSOPOLIS — The Diamond Lake Triathlon is quickly approaching.
More than 75 competitors have already signed up for the July 21 event which is being hosted by Diamond Lake Marina.
“We anticipate 150 racers,” said race director Joe Fazzini. “There are a few changes like Southwestern Michigan College becoming a Diamond sponsor for the first time. Additionally, we have a new host sponsor as well, the Diamond Lake Marina adjacent to the Diamond Lake Yacht Club on Shore Acres Drive. Saving the best for last, Fleet Feet of Mishawaka is sponsor cash prizes for the top three female and male finishers.”
Racing begins at 7:30 a.m. for the Sprint Triathlon, which consists of a 500-yard swim in Diamond Lake, a 12-mile bike ride and a 3.3-mile run.
The Diamond Lake Triathlon benefits Alex Stschearban, a local triathlete, who suffered a cardiac arrest after competing in a triathlon. The money raised will be used to help with his medical bills during his recovery.
This year there will be cash prizes provided by Fleet Feet of Mishawaka, Indiana.
First place will receive $100 in the form of a Fleet Feet voucher with second place getting $75 and third place $50.
