NILES — Instead of spending their Saturday lounging indoors, a band of volunteers will be spreading across the city to help residents with an assortment of projects.

The third annual Serve the City day will take place starting at 8 a.m. Saturday, July 14. The service day is organized by Relevant Church. So far, about 35 volunteers have signed up to help out.

During Serve the City, volunteers will meet at the church starting at 8 a.m. They will then divide to conquer multiple projects. Some volunteers will assist at the Pregnancy Care Center and the YMCA, while others will help to serve up to-go breakfasts at the Niles Fire Station Complex, where first responders will be able to get a fresh hot breakfast that includes a breakfast sandwich, coffee, Danish and fruit. Other volunteers will participate in an adopt-the-block project and knock on doors between Third and Fifth streets, asking residents if they need assistance with anything around the house — whether it’s help vacuuming or mowing the lawn.

After volunteers have completed their projects, they will host a Summer Bash, at Clevenger Park, which is located at Cherry and Fifth streets. There will be free hot dogs, chips and water, as well as face painting and water balloons.

Rhonda James, the church’s executive administrator, said the annual service day was inspired by a need that Relevant Church members saw in their city.

“You know how when you are driving down the street, and you see yards undone, and you see weeds are not picked, windows may need to be washed or lawns need to be mowed,” James said.

When residents find out that the person knocking at the door is there to lend a helping hand, they tend to be receptive, James said.

“It’s great, because usually when someone is knocking on your door that person wants something from you,” James said. “We don’t want anything. We want to clean your dishes or mop your floors, so they are like ‘yeah, sure.’”

James said they picked this specific neighborhood because it was nearby Relevant Church, which is located in the downtown. She said the Serve the City project reminds people of Niles that their community cares about them.

“When you look back at past generations, people were there for people,” James said. “I just think it is important that they know that people are still out there for them.”

James said they are still looking for volunteers to assist with the Serve the City day. All they need to do is show up at Relevant Church, 210 E. Main St. at 8 a.m. Saturday, July 14. The church will supply all cleaning supplies and gloves.

The following day, Relevant Church will host another food truck event.

The food trucks will be available from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday, July 15 on Main Street between Second and Third streets. The average cost for a plate of food is about $8 per person, depending on the selected truck. A live DJ will also be playing music.

The food trucks will include Sammy Arepas, Cool Runnings, Jim’s Smokin’ Café and Hawaiian Ice.

Relevant Church seeks to engage their Niles community with a number of community events. James encouraged people to check it out.

“It’s just a way of community gathering,” James said.
