DOWAGIAC — Motorcycle riders looking to feel the wind in their hair as they ride down the street will soon have the opportunity to do that and also give back to a local organization at the same time.

The Dowagiac Moose Riders will host a ride to support Cass County Cancer Services on Sunday. Registration will be from 10 a.m. to noon, with the ride taking off at noon. Registration is $15 per rider and $10 per passenger. The ride will start at the Dowagiac Moose Lodge, 54867 M-51 N., Dowagiac, and run through Cass County, taking stops in both Marcellus and Edwardsburg. The ride will conclude again at the Dowagiac Moose Lodge, where a dinner of chicken and sloppy joes will be served, followed by an auction.

There will also be a breakfast hosted at 9 a.m. the day of the ride, but breakfast is not included in the price of registration.

All proceeds from the event will go toward Cass County Cancer Services, which provides services including gas money, rides to doctor’s appointments and other support to those living with cancer in Cass County.

“Everyone with [Cass County Cancer Services] is a volunteer. No one gets a dime out of this other than those who have cancer,” said Leonard Hartke Sr., a member of the Dowagiac Moose Riders. “That’s important. We [at the Moose Lodge] wanted to support them.”

Calling Cass County Cancer Services a worthy organization, Hartke said he is happy to support the organization, as he supports the fight against cancer, saying it is a disease that has affected nearly everyone in Cass County in one way or another. Hartke himself has lost family members to cancer.

“Cancer has no respect for anyone. It can affect you no matter your age or your stage in life or anything else,” he said. “I also really support that all the money [from Cass County Cancer Services] stays here. This stays here in our county and everything raised goes toward the people who need the help.”

Hartke said he would encourage anyone to participate in the ride, saying it will be a fun event that will also go toward a good cause.

“You get to go for a long ride, get some dinner and stay for the auction if you want. It should be fun,” he said. “All the money raised will go toward [Cass County Cancer Services] and they could really use it. We can help a lot of people this way.”
