NILES — Residents will get to enjoy a free music concert and get an update about the former Riverfront Café at an upcoming event in Riverfront Park.
The Raging Rumor Music Festival will be sponsored by Raging Rumor Productions and will take place from 5 to 10 p.m. Saturday, July 28, at the amphitheater in Riverfront Park. City council members voted Monday night to approve the event.
The music festival is a collaboration between Rumor Records business owner Matt Shaver and business owner Chance Smith, who has been working to restore and renovate the former Riverfront Café.
“We have always talked about running this type of concert series,” Smith said. “This is probably [going] to be the biggest concert event that Niles has ever had.”
The festival will feature three bands, including The Timbre of Cedar, Jake LeMOND and Corentyn Fogle. The headlining band will be Tiger and Frame. The theme is indie/alternative and people are encouraged to dress like they are going to Coachella — a popular California concert. In addition to music, those who visit Riverfront Park can choose from a variety of food trucks to choose from.
Smith said he wanted to collaborate on an event that would appeal to a younger crowd and draw people to Niles downtown. The hope is that the festival will be the first in a series.
“We want a giant music festival type feel,” Smith said. “We want them to have a huge crowd.”
Smith announced in March that renovations on the once prominent restaurant, the Riverfront Café, were well underway. While he wanted to keep much about the businesses a surprise, he and his sister Sage Smith have been remodeling the restaurant and plan to create a place where people can enjoy casual dining options, as well as frozen yogurt and coffee.
In between sets at the music festival, Smith said he intends to give those in attendance an update about progress to the former Riverfront Café. The business’ new name has yet to be revealed, but people could find that out during the concert.
“We are using this event as not a launch for opening, but a launch for everything, [including] the name, the logo and even the menu possibly,” Smith said. “We plan on selling restaurant merchandise and selling some goodies.”
Smith said he saw an opportunity to not only get people excited about the music event, but also the new restaurant. He asked that those who plan to participate bring blankets instead of chairs, because they want to encourage the crowd to remain standing.
“We want a standing crowd close to the concert, so we can give it a real cool feel for the bands,” Smith said.
Smith said some area businesses are helping to sponsor the event and the rest will be paid out of pocket. In the days to come, he said he hopes to spread the word about the event and make it a summer tradition in downtown Niles.
“We are just hoping that we can get a big enough crowd and then next year bring in bigger bands,” Smith said.
