NILES — Last year when August Garritano helped to host a Performing Arts Workshops for youth at Brandywine Elementary School, children got the chance to write and perform their own play and take part in a variety of music and art activities.
Often times, Garritano said he heard the childrens’ parents say they wish they had classes like PAW when they were growing up.
This summer Garritano, a co-founder of PAW, Inc., decided to give parents a chance to participate.
On Saturday, parents and their children can take part in the PAW FAM JAM. The inaugural event will include a variety of workshops throughout the day, from ukulele lessons to hip hop dance and improvisation classes. While the classes are geared toward parents and their children 7 and up, anyone is welcome to join. Children younger than 7 may participate, but must have a parent present.
The PAW FAM JAM classes cost $10 per person. Half-day passes for three classes cost $25 and full day passes for six classes cost $50. Walk-ins are welcome, but people are encouraged to register via website before Saturday.
PAW is a nonprofit organization that seeks to connect youth with music and the arts. For the inaugural PAW FAM JAM, Garritano said he wanted to give parents and children a chance to bond through music.
“We often hear [from parents], ‘I wish I had something like this when I was a kid.’ So, we said ‘Let’s invite the parents, grandparents and aunts and uncles to a workshop,’” Garritano said. “Part of our mission statement is to enrich this generation and the next to come. If we can bring them all together — it will bring joy to their lives.”
In addition to creating new memories with their children, Garritano said parents will be able to take away a variety of skills.
“We are offering different things like acting and ukulele,” Garritano said. “Maybe if you don’t know how to play, you can learn a few chords and play songs. The workshops are a chance to dabble, but will give you the chance to learn some actual skills, [too].”
The workshop schedule is as follows:
• 9 a.m. — Musical Theatre Dance, taught by Carlee Stoker
• 10 a.m. — Acting Improv, taught by Danny Ferenczi
