NILES — A 20-year-old man was arrested early Saturday morning after leading police on a chase through Niles.

The chase was initiated at 12:43 a.m. when Berrien County Sheriff’s Deputy Jared Phillips observed a two-door Toyota Camry Solara failing to stop for the Michigan State Police on S. 11th Street, near Walmart.

According to the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department, Phillips attempted to stop the vehicle, driven by Javier Daniel Huston, 20, of Niles, at S. 11th St., near Silverbrook Avenue, but Huston sped away from the officer. The pursuit took place on the eastside of the city of Niles.

Eventually, the suspect lost control of his vehicle and came to a stop in the 800 block of N. 14th St., before attempting to flee police on foot.

When Huston continued to disregard Phillips’ order to stop, Phillips deployed his department Taser and was able to take him into custody.

Huston was the sole occupant of the car. He was lodged at the Berrien County Jail on open charges of third-degree flee and elude, resisting and obstructing, first-degree operating while intoxicated and open intoxication in a motor vehicle.

Assisting agencies included the Michigan State Police and Niles Police Department.
