BARODA — Lake Michigan Vintners is hosting its one year anniversary celebration on Sunday, May 27 in downtown Baroda. The event will take place from noon to 8 p.m. Sunday, May 27, at the Lake Michigan Vintners Tasting Room.
Visitors to the boutique winery’s tasting room can enjoy live music, 50 percent discount on tastings, Lake & Farmer food truck and two new wine releases, 2017 Rosé and 2016 Pinot Noir. With only 24 cases of Rosé and 50 cases of 2016 Pinot Noir produced, these wines are bound to sell out quickly, officials said. The Rosé is lighter in style and a blend of 60 percent Cabernet Franc and 40 percent Cabernet Sauvignon. The Pinot Noir is Burgundian in style, and pairs well with both brie and BBQ.
“We’ve employed old world techniques with a modern understanding to best express the unique qualities of our local grapes and vineyards,” said Michael Moyer, who oversees the academic program, teaching winery and tasting room.
All Lake Michigan Vintners wines are produced by students of Lake Michigan College’s Wine and Viticulture program as part of their education in vineyard management and enology.
“Because of southwest Michigan’s soil and climate, the region’s wines are more representative of European wines than those from the west coast of the US. They are naturally fruit forward, balanced, and extremely food friendly,” Moyer said.
Lake Michigan College launched the Wine & Viticulture Technology program with the support of leading wineries spanning along the Lake Michigan Shore Wine Trail up to Old Mission Peninsula.
Their aim is to foster the next generation of expert winemakers, and to advance the state in its burgeoning status as a recognized, world class wine region.
Students of the program experience every aspect of the wine industry, including vineyard management, winemaking, lab analysis, and all aspects of business and tasting room operations.
