BUCHANAN — A section of Red Bud Trail north of Wheatberry Tavern & Restaurant was closed Wednesday, after heavy rains caused part of the hillside to slip onto the road. The Berrien County Road Department re-opened the road Thursday after nearly a day and a half of work restoring the road.
Rachel Reynolds, a communications intern with the road department, said that officials are working to obtain a quote to extend a retaining wall on the hill, intended to keep debris from toppling onto the road. Subsequently, the road was blocked off so that the Berrien County Road Department could remove debris. No one was on the road when the debris fell.
According to the National Weather Service, a flood warning is in effect through Saturday for the St. Joseph River in Niles, impacting Berrien County. Residents are reminded to never drive their car through a flooded area. For an updated forecast visit forecast.weather.gov.
