Chieftains split with Bobcats

DOWAGIAC — Visiting Brandywine split a non-conference doubleheader with Dowagiac Thursday.
The Bobcats won the opening game 7-6, while the Chieftains rebounded to win the nightcap 10-6.
Brandywine used a pair of three-run innings to help build a 6-3 lead on Dowagiac.
The Chieftains trailed 7-4 when it scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh, but could not come up with the tying or winning runs.
Dowagiac finished with 11 hits in the contest, including a pair of doubles and a home run by Amiyah Smith, who was 3-for-4 with a two RBIs.
Maddie Stockwell also had three hits, including a double, while Madison Potter homered and Greta Whitaker added a double.
“Routine plays cost us again tonight in the first game,” said Dowagiac coach Mike Behnke. “In the second game we started out playing great and then not making routine plays let Brandywine back into the game. Thankfully Madison hit her second home run and Amiyah had a clutch 2 out walk off hit.”
Halie Ebersol had three hits for the Bobcats, while Malikiyyah Abdulla added two runs.
In the nightcap, Potter hit her second home run and drove in two runs, while Smith doubled.
Mekenna Gaideski and Jessie Hulett also drove in a pair of runs.
Nicole Sachman had three hits and an RBI, while Kennedy Byrd and Delani Nelson each drove in two runs.
Nelson was the pitcher in both contest.
