Volunteer of the Week: Starla Miller, of Niles

Published 7:19 am Wednesday, May 9, 2018

Starla Miller, 65, of Niles, is a volunteer with Evy’s Closet. The women’s clothing ministry is based out of the United Methodist Church, 302 Cedar St. in Niles. Those in need are welcome to visit the closet and pick clothing items for free twice a month. Miller has been a volunteer since the closet opened last year.

What do you do as a volunteer at Evy’s Closet?

I hang clothes up, straighten up clothes and stock. People are allowed to come twice a month, so we have a system where when they come in, we write their names down on a card and mark off that they were already there that month.

What inspired you to volunteer for Evy’s Closet?

I just knew people in the area needed assistance. I also knew that Brenda [Engel] who runs and founded the closet needed help with it, so I decided to volunteer my time.

What do you enjoy most about volunteering?

I enjoy the interaction with the people that are coming and seeing how happy they are, no matter how small the item they end up with is. They are just elated to be getting something.

Are people usually grateful for the service that Evy’s Closet provides?

Yes, they are. [We hear] gratitude and excitement in their voices.

What do you get out of the volunteering experience?

Just the feeling of being able to help those in need.

How did you find out about Evy’s Closet?

I am a member of United Methodist Church.

Why would you encourage other people to volunteer for this cause?

It is discipleship. It is what we are supposed to do: reach out and help others. The need in the community is very great.

Is Evy’s Closet seeking clothing donations?

I believe we take donations at all times. Right now, we are switching the stock over to summer [wear], so summer clothes donations would be more in need.

Why would you encourage people who might be cleaning out their closet to choose to give it to Evy’s Closet?

I don’t think people in our community realize how many people there are in need. I think people might think ‘I have what I need’ and assume others do, too.
