THREE OAKS — On Sunday, members of the Daughters of the American Revolution recognized four students who qualified for the DAR Good Citizen program.

A reception took place at the Three Oaks United Methodist Church. Cake and refreshments were served by the Rebecca Dewey Chapter.

The students selected included: Hannah McIntyre, Bridgman High School who plans on attending SMC; Nicole Gibson, River Valley High School who plans on attending Central Michigan, and Kelly Bickel, Niles High School, who plans on attending University of Michigan. Each received a check.

Jarvis Tarnowski, of New Buffalo High School, signed up to join the U.S. Marine Corp. He is the top winner and his essay will go on to the State DAR. He also received a check. Jarvis read his winning essay for all in attendance.

The DAR Good Citizen program seeks to recognize outstanding young people who exhibit the qualities of good citizenship in their homes, schools and communities. The DAR Good Citizen program and scholarship contest is intended to encourage and reward the qualities of good citizenship. The program is open to all high school seniors enrolled in public or private schools accredited by their state board of education.

Each school may honor only one senior class student per year. The students selected as the school’s DAR Good Citizen have the following traits: dependability, service, leadership and patriotism. Senior students are given a topic to write a patriotic essay.

The reception took place on Sunday afternoon, April 29, at the Three Oaks United Methodist Church. There were four students who qualified for this year’s awards.
