Starfish Story: Ryan Murray

When we consider who helps educate and influence the youth in our schools, it doesn’t take long to realize that there are so many important people in children’s lives upon who parents rely every day. There are teachers, coaches, and other staff all of whom shape and help kids grow. There are custodians, bus drivers and kitchen staff. The list also includes people that protect our children both in and out of school.
Today we would like to recognize the efforts of our local law enforcement agencies and School Resource Officer Ryan Murray. Together they keep our students, staff and community safe. This partnership benefits students and teachers alike.
Officer Murray is an important part of our team and serves as the liaison that coordinates our efforts. He works with Dowagiac Police, county and state agencies, and others to ensure that students are as safe as possible both in the school buildings, on their way home, and in their personal lives.
While Murray is a resource that families trust, he doesn’t work alone. Many officers at Dowagiac Police Department are familiar to the families and students. It isn’t unusual to see Officer Lewis at the high school in the mornings. Sergeant Davis and reserves, such as Officer Fry, can be seen at numerous games. Detective Behnke and Detective Sergeant Toxopeus are a little more inconspicuous, but they are often around too. Chief Grinnewald and Deputy Chief Bradford have a strong presence and have built a strong team.
The efforts of all the officers to be visible and approachable have strengthened the bond between the police department, the students, and the school. This partnership provides a safe environment allowing teachers to teach and students
