DOWAGIAC — Joe Morin, one of the founders of the family-owned Sister Lakes Brewing Company, takes tradition seriously.
To him, it is essential that tradition be used in the way the brewery brews its beers, cooks its food and — this Saturday, at least — how it throws parties.
Sister Lakes Brewing Company, 92500 Co. Road 690, Dowagiac, will host an all-day St. Patrick’s Day celebration from noon to 11 p.m. Saturday. The second annual “St. Paddy’s Day Extravaganza” will feature live music from Bill Bosler and Uncle John Pottast, from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m., and Brooks Farm String Band, from 7 to 10 p.m.
A traditional St. Patrick’s Day meal will be served at the event, featuring house-made corned beef, with cabbage, carrots, potatoes and Irish soda bread, corned beef Reuben sandwiches, green beer and the return of one of the brewery’s signature beers, the Irish Red Beards.
To Morin, the St. Patrick’s Day party, and the annual half St. Patrick’s Day party in September, is a way for he and his family to get back to their roots and share their culture with the people of southwest Michigan.
Sister Lakes Brewing Company was founded by Morin, his father Jared and siblings Dave, Brian and Katie. Descended from an Irish fruit farmer from Riverside, Michigan, Morin said that he and his family take their Irish heritage seriously and attempt to honor it in everything the brewery does.
“We’ve always been very proud of our heritage,” Morin said. “A lot of what we do comes back to that, and we love to celebrate that.”
Though the St. Patrick’s Day party will serve as a way for Morin and his family to celebrate their heritage, he said that anyone can enjoy the day, whether or not they are of Irish decent.
“It’s a fun day to celebrate,” he said. “We want to make here feel like home for our customers. This place is an extension of our home. … We are inviting you in as part of the family to celebrate with us.”
Morin added that Sister Lakes Brewing Company goes out of its way to make the atmosphere family friendly, so that families like his can enjoy in the fun of the St. Patrick’s Day party.
“This is more than just a gathering to chug beer,” Morin said. “It’s family friendly. We pride ourselves on being an all-inclusive establishment where you can bring both the kids and the grandparents. People come all time here with their families. We want to make people feel welcome here.”
Morin said that he and his family, including his extended family, will be attending the St. Patrick’s Day party, enjoying it along with their customers, even though several members will be working the event.
“We will be out there on the flooring having fun,” he said. “We love the party, which is why we host it. We think other people will enjoy it, too.”
