NILES TOWNSHIP — A car chase that was initiated by White Pigeon Michigan police Monday night ended when the suspect crashed their car near the state line in Niles Township.

Sgt. Ryan Schoonveld with the Michigan State Police Niles Post said the chase started when White Pigeon Police initiated a traffic stop in an undisclosed location on a vehicle with Iowa license plates.

When officers approached the vehicle, the suspect fled and started a chase. The chase went into Indiana and back into Michigan, ending when the suspect crashed their car at S. Third St. and Stateline Road in Niles Township at about 9:40 p.m. Schoonveld said he did not have details about the chase route or how long the pursuit lasted.

“It had to have gone on quite a while to go the direction I was told it went,” Schoonveld said.

Schoonveld said the suspect who was driving the vehicle was arrested at the scene. There were two other passengers reported to have been in the suspect’s vehicle at the time of the chase.

Schoonveld said the suspect’s name is being held by authorities at this time and he is not sure of the charges the suspect would receive. Authorities are working to extradite the suspect back to Indiana.

Indiana State Police and White Pigeon Police were the primary authorities involved, according to Schoonveld. Berrien County authorities were not involved in the chase and responded only to the crash for support.
