DECATUR — The Cassopolis boys basketball team joined two other Ranger squads in being undefeated in the regular season Tuesday night.
Cassopolis defeated Decatur 73-56 in the final regular and Southwest 10 Conference game of the season.
The Rangers are the first boys basketball team since the 1982-83 season to finish the regular season without a loss.
Decatur kept the game close through the first three quarters and trailed just 55-53 heading into the final eight minutes.
Cassopolis (20-0, 18-0 Southwest 10) put the game away by outscoring the Raiders 18-3 in the fourth quarter.
“All I can say it was a win, but not a win you want to go into the district with,” Cassopolis coach Ricky Evans said. “The effort wasn’t there on the defensive end of the court. We gave up too many easy baskets. It is a good season and I am proud of the kids, but now the real season starts and we have to stay focused and ready to play March 5. There is no tomorrow in the district if you lose.”
Tyrese Hunt-Thompson scored a game-high 21 points to lead the Rangers, who also got eight points each from Kiambu Gary, Walter Lee, Xander Smith and Brandon Anderson.
Devin Jennings also reached double figures for Cassopolis with 14 points.
Decatur (11-9, 9-9 Southwest 10) was led by Malcom Underwood’s 15 points, while Brad Mroczek added 12 points and Jakob Southworth 10.
The Rangers will now set their sights on defending their Class C district championship when they host Bridgman Monday night.
