NILES — A Niles man was hospitalized after his vehicle crashed into a mailbox and rolled over outside the city Thursday, according to the Cass County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies with the department were dispatched to a one-vehicle accident on Leet Road north of U.S. Highway 12 at 9:06 p.m. that evening.
The crash occurred when 56-year-old Walter Langheinrich was driving on the roadway and lost control of his vehicle due to the conditions. Langheinrich’s vehicle then struck a mailbox, which caused it to roll over.
Crews with the Southwestern Michigan Community Ambulance Service extracted the Niles man from his vehicle, and he was transported to a hospital for his injuries.
Police said alcohol was not a factor in the accident. Langheinrich was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash.
Members of the Edwardsburg Fire Department assisted deputies and EMS crews at the scene.
