• Winterizing the Garden
Will take place from 1 to 2:30 p.m. This activity offers a way to discover ways to extend seasonal interest in the garden and home by using conifers. As an added bonus, participants will learn which varieties hold up well when used in holiday decorations such as wreaths, swags, garland and centerpieces. Even in a small garden, a judicious use of a few varieties can add considerable interest to your holiday décor as well as in the garden. Cost: $12 (Members $10). Register by Feb. 9.
• Sunday journeys
From 1:30 to 3 p.m. there will be an Ohio History Sampler, covering periods from 200 BC to the NFL Hall of Fame.
Those who attend might be surprised to learn about the history Ohio has to tell: Indian mounds that date back to 200 BC; Fort Laurens, the only Revolutionary War fort in Ohio; Fort Meigs, built during the War of 1812; the boyhood homes of Civil War generals Ulysses S. Grant and William Tecumseh Sherman; the homes of presidents William McKinley and William Howard Taft; and the National Football League Hall of Fame. Cost: $12 (Members $10)

• Great Backyard Bird Count
The 21st Annual Great Backyard Bird Count takes place nationally Feb. 16 to 19. Fernwood will celebrate by hosting a drop-in event between 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Organized by the National Audubon Society and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, the Great Backyard Bird Count has become a very popular citizen-science project that reveals amazing data about the world’s birds. During the third weekend of February, participants from around the world record each and every bird they see, whether in their backyard, at a favorite park, or just while out and about for those days. Last year, 173,826 checklists were submitted by 214,018 participants from 148 countries, recording 5940 bird species — that is nearly two-thirds of all known bird species in the world.
The community is welcome to join Fernwood on Saturday, Feb. 17, by counting the birds at the Nature Center feeders. Those who attend can learn about bird identification, their natural history, feeding birds, and to help tally bird numbers.
