Chieftains flying into the finals

DOWAGIAC — The Dowagiac competitive cheer team will take a full head of steam into Wednesday’s Wolverine Conference championship at Otsego High School.
The Chieftains, who earned a fifth-place finish with a school record number of points at the final regular conference jamboree, finished second at the Sturgis Invitational on Saturday.
Host Sturgis won the competition with 698.82 points, while Dowagiac was second with 622.08 and Vicksburg third with 595.74.
White Pigeon, Battle Creek Harper Creek and Bronson rounded out the order of finish.
“I feel really confident about conference finals tomorrow,” Dowagiac coach Jamie Whitfield said. “We have been improving each meet and we have been able to add in more girls to the rounds.”
The Chieftains will go 10th in the opening, while they will compete fifth in the second and third rounds.
Paw Paw won all three conference jamborees. Plainwell finished runner-up in the first jamboree and third in the final two, while Sturgis was fourth in the opening jamboree and runner-up in the final two.
Dowagiac enters the competition in seventh place after finishing eighth at Paw Paw, seventh at Edwardsburg and fifth at Allegan.
