HOWARD TOWNSHIP — A man is in custody on suspicions of shooting his estranged wife in Howard Township and then driving her to a Steak ‘n Shake in South Bend Tuesday, according to the Michigan State Police Department.
The St. Joseph County Indiana Police Department responded to the scene about 3:25 p.m., after the suspect, who had been attempting to drive the victim to the hospital, called the police to report the shooting, according to Michigan State Police Sgt. Richard Dragomer.
Officers found a female victim suffering from gunshot wound at the scene. The victim was transported to South Bend Memorial Hospital for treatment, and is expected to survive, according to police.
Her estranged husband was identified as the suspect, and was arrested at the scene. The suspect currently is lodged at the St. Joseph County Jail pending extradition back to Michigan, where he faces attempted murder charges.
Dragomer said the shooting took place at Rivers Court in Howard Township and that the suspect was attempting to drive his wife to the hospital in South Bend. During the course of the drive, Dragomer said he believed the suspect called the police and was told to pull over at the nearest location, which was a Steak ‘n Shake located at SR 933.
Detectives and troopers from the Niles MSP post are continuing to investigate. The victim’s and suspect’s names are not being released at this time, pending notification of family.
