Vicki Earl, of Niles, is a volunteer with Evy’s Closet. For the past year, Earl has helped to sort donations and run the women’s closet, where those in need can get free clothing, accessories and shoes. The closet is open from 4 to 6 p.m. every Thursday at Wesley United Methodist Church, 302 Cedar St. in Niles.
What do you do for Evy’s Closet?
I go in there and help to provide backup in case someone else can’t come. There are supposed to be two people there at a time. I go in and sort out clothes and help the people that come in and pick out things for themselves.
How did you get involved with Evy’s Closet?
Well, I go to the church where it is at and I am always interested in helping out good causes to help other people. So I thought I would be willing to help out those that are less fortunate. [Brenda Engel, who founded the closet] her mother, Evy used to go to our church. Brenda is a very willing and good person who likes to help other people. I knew it was a good cause and something that I wanted to help out with when I can.
What do you enjoy most about your volunteer work?
Just the fact that I meet other people and maybe help them out. [I like] helping them to get something they probably could not get because of lack of funds. It gives me satisfaction that I help out other people, because that is what we should be doing: caring about other people. It is a good cause that is good for our community.
Why would you encourage other people to volunteer?
I would encourage other people to volunteer, because it gives you the satisfaction after you do it knowing that you helped others. That is what it gives me. It helps you out. It is for a good cause.
How do people help to support Evy’s Closet?
They are always accepting donations for women’s clothing, shoes, coats, jackets, anytime of year. There is always a need for it. We have quite a few people that come in now and take advantage of it. [Donations] can be dropped off at the church. They would be welcomed. Right now, we are looking for winter clothing. Sooner or later we will be accepting donations for spring.
