MARCELLUS — Three people were injured after a Marcellus woman lost control of her vehicle on an icy Marcellus Highway and struck another vehicle Saturday morning, according to the Cass County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies with the department were dispatched to a reported personal injury crash on Marcellus Highway, east of Lawrence Road, in Volinia Township at 8:30 a.m. that morning.
Police learned that 70-year-old Marilyn Koyl, of Marcellus, was driving west on the highway when she lost control of her vehicle on the ice and crossed over the center line. Her vehicle then struck an eastbound truck, driven by 56-year-old Carl Shelby Jr., of Decatur, which went into a ditch on the south side of the road. Koyl’s vehicle spun around and landed in a ditch on the north side.
Due to her injuries, a helicopter with West Michigan Air Care transported Koyl to Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo for treatment. Crews with Pride Care Ambulance transported Shelby and his passenger, 56-year-old Sherry Shelby, to Three Rivers Hospital for treatment of their injuries.
Police believe that Koyl was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, through the other injured parties were. Intoxicants do not appear to be a factor.
Officers are continuing to investigate the accident.
Members of the Pokagon Tribal Police and Wayne Township Fire Department assisted deputies and emergency personnel at the scene.
