Roundup: Niles edged by Mattawan; Eddies nip Otsego

NILES — Trailing 23-21 at halftime, visiting Mattawan outscored Niles 11-2 in the third quarter to pull out a 40-37 SMAC non-divisional girls basketball win over the Vikings Tuesday night.
The Wildcats (4-3) led 13-10 after one quarter, but Niles (2-4) rallied to take the halftime lead.
The Vikings outscored Mattawan 12-8 in the final eight minutes, but could not overcome the third-quarter deficit.
Alycia Patterson led all scorers with 21 points as she was 5-of-6 from 3-point range.
Natalie Foster led the Wildcats with 15 points.
The Vikings travel to St. Joseph for a 5:45 p.m. SMAC West Division contest Friday.
Edwardsburg at Otsego
OTSEGO — Visiting Edwardsburg held off Otsego 58-55 in a battle of undefeated Wolverine Conference teams Tuesday night.
The Eddies lead the South Division with a 3-0 record and an overall mark of 7-1, while the Bulldogs are a game back of Plainwell in the North Division with a 2-0 record.
Otsego is 5-4 overall after having dropped three consecutive games.
Abbey Krugh led the Eddies with a game-high 21 points, while Kaitlyn Zarycki added 17 and Claire Bartz 12.
Mattison Rayman led Otsego with 18 points, while Jaycle Callaway added 10.
Edwardsburg travels to South Haven for another Wolverine Conference non-divisional match-up at 6 p.m. Friday.
Cassopolis at Harford
HARTFORD — Despite 26 points from Santaja Gibson, the visiting Cassopolis girls basketball team dropped a 56-46 Southwest 10 Conference decision to Hartford Tuesday night.
The Indians (4-1) races out to a 20-6 first quarter lead and keep their foot on the gas over the final three quarters to earn the victory.
Hartford led 37-14 at halftime and 50-25 heading into the final quarter of play.
Besides Gibson, the Rangers got eight points from Sophia Fiala and four points from Jamiee Johnson.
Cassopolis (1-4) will host Mendon in another Southwest 10 contest at 6 p.m. Friday night.
