Forest pests discussion at upcoming presentation

CASSOPOLIS — People are invited to join officials with the Southwest X Southwest Corner Cooperative Invasive Species Management Area for a free event on forest pests and tree health from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6, at the Cassopolis Main Library.

With the Cass County Conservation District’s Annual Tree Sale just around the corner, this is a great time to learn about the trees in the local landscape, and the threats they face, CISMA officials said.

Eleanor Serocki, coordinator for the SWxSW CISMA, will give the presentation and talking about forest pests in the county.

The CISMA covers Berrien, Cass, and Van Buren counties, and works with local landowners and municipalities to protect local environments, economy and homes from invasive species. Serocki will take over duties from Kimberly Barton, and will serve as the Cass County Invasive Species Educator beginning in April.

Whether people have a few trees in their lawn or a large wood lot, this presentation covers vital information to protecting local trees, CISMA representatives said.

People who plan to attend are asked to give the Cass County Conservation District office a call at (269) 445-8641, ext. 5. Registration is not required, but RSVPs are appreciated. as light refreshments will be provided.

The SWxSW CISMA is a grant funded program to manage invasive species in Berrien, Cass and Van Buren counties. With funding from the Michigan Invasive Species Grant Program, the CISMA aims to help landowners and stakeholders in the southwest Michigan area manage invasive species.
