South Bend — To welcome the new year, the Potwatami Zoo is inviting people to participate in some winter activities.
The zoo will be open from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 6 and activities will include:
A paint-your-own-gecko craft will be offered for $5 each in the Learning Center Classroom. The Endangered Species Carousel will be running weather permitting with tickets available for purchase at $2 per seated rider.
Additionally, the zoo will be throwing a birthday party for the chimpanzees in celebration of Babyface, a female chimp, who turned 46 on Jan. 1. The party will take place at the exhibit at 1:30 p.m.
The Potawatomi Zoo AAZK chapter will host a bake sale to raise funds for animal conservation and collect enrichment donations for the zoo’s own residents. Guests can view the zoo’s Enrichment Wishlist on its website to view items most needed and wanted for animals. Those not able to make it to the Winter Day can bring items to the zoo during the week from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. or can purchase items from the zoo’s Amazon Wishlist, in which items will be mailed directly to the zoo.
The Congo Café will be open with a menu that includes hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken strips and more. Hot chocolate, coffee and other beverages available.
Visit the Potawatomi Zoo for remaining winter days scheduled in 2018: Jan. 20, Feb. 3 and 17, and March 3. The zoo will be open from noon to 3 p.m. on each Winter Day, with the last admission at 2:30 p.m.
Admission for Winter Days is $5.50 per person, children 2 years of age and under are free, and admission for Potawatomi Zoo members is free. For more info: potawatomizoo.org
