Irma E. Hayslip, 85, of Niles, passed away on Monday, December 19, 2017 at Memorial Hospital in South Bend.
She was born on May 1, 1932 in Niles to Orville L. and Pearl M. (Havner) Carpenter.
Irma married Franklin Hayslip and together they raised a blended family of fourteen children. She was a homemaker and a mother. She enjoyed gardening, canning, sewing and swinging a hammer on occasion. She was an avid bingo, scrabble and boggle player. Irma was a very dangerous game of spoons competitor.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, children, Frankie Hayslip, Linda Hayslip, Jackie Hayslip and Susan (Hayslip) Hodgemire; granddaughter, Renee Ritchie; brothers, Orville Carpenter, Wesley Carpenter, Dave Carpenter and Raymond Carpenter; sisters, Florence Havner, Goldie Reid, June Juhasz and Eva Bolding and her beloved dog, Niki.
Irma is survived by her children, LeRoy (Louise) Warner, Peggy Kovacs, Sylvia (Wayne) Yaw, Audrey (Nancy) Warner, Robert Hayslip, Paula (John) Salyer, Kathy (Brian) Anderson, Mike Hayslip, Franklin Hayslip and DJ (Angie) Hayslip; 41 grandchildren; 65 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Danny Carpenter; a sister, Bernadine Comer; beloved dogs, Cocoa and Scrappy; many nieces and nephews and a large extended family who will greatly miss her. A special thank you to our dear friend James Williams for all of your help.
Family and friends will gather to celebrate Irma’s life with a visitation from noon until 1 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home in Niles on Thursday, Dec. 28, 2017. Burial will follow at Smith’s Chapel.
