DOWAGIAC — The only thing more brilliant than Vincent J. Jewelers’ selection of diamond-studded rings and sterling silver necklaces will be the giving spirit on display by the downtown Dowagiac shop’s staff and customers this holiday season.
Beginning Friday, the local jewelry store will be selling special sets of pearl and crystal bracelets for $10. The entire amount of the sale — not just the proceeds — will be donated to C. Wimberley Automotive Group’s holiday food drive, Feed the Hungry, which helps pay for food items to help feed Cass County families throughout next year.
The bracelets, which are made with transparent, white and amber-colored beads, were supplied to Vincent J. Jewelers by a Chicago vendor, and were created specifically to raise money for various charity causes, said Jim Frazier, owner of the Dowagiac business.
“[The bracelets] make great stocking stuffers,” Frazier said.
Frazier, who also owns and operates a second Vincent J. Jewelers shop in Coloma, has been selling the trinkets at the Dowagiac store since the Feed the Hungry campaign began nearly 10 years ago, he said. The store raises between $500 to $600 every year for the food drive; last year, Frazier and his staff presented a $600 check to the program.
Contributions from this year’s Feed the Hungry campaign will be handed to Dowagiac’s ACTION Ministries, which will use the money to purchase food items for its pantry as well as others across Cass County. In addition, the funds will be used to help pay for visits by mobile food pantries through the Feeding America program, which will stop by various sites across the county throughout 2018.
Organizers with this year’s Feed the Hungry campaign are looking to raise $20,000 in donations.
Frazier said his store’s fundraiser is one way that he, his family and staff can give back to the people of Dowagiac, who have allowed him to stay in business for the past 21 years.
“The reason I do it is because I know [the money] will be going to local people,” he said. “It’s not leaving town.”
Frazier is encouraging everyone interested to stop by the Dowagiac shop next month to buy a set of bracelets or two — there is no limit on how many customers may purchase, he said. To him, the deal is a win-win for everyone.
“The bracelets can help make someone’s day, and the food bank will help families out of a desperate situation,” Frazier said.
