Authorities are investigating the death of an area hunter whose body was discovered outside a forest on Pokagon Highway outside Dowagiac Thursday evening, according to officials with the Cass County Sheriff’s Office.

Police were dispatched around 6 p.m. to investigate a corpse located on the highway, located near Hampshire Street in Pokagon Township.

Authorities learned the body was of a hunter from Buchanan, who they believed died of a heart attack while attempting to remove a dead deer from the forest. The corpse of the deer was located nearby the body.

Police are withholding the name of the deceased until his next of kin are notified.
